Perplexed again

I found an article in today's paper reporting that Yusuf Islam (the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens) will be deported Wednesday after being denied entry to the US. Homeland Security Department spokesman Dennis Murphy said Islam was "denied admission to the United States on national security grounds." The reason for the denial? "Multiple intelligence sources in recent weeks indicated the peace activist may have associations with potential terrorists."

Islam is a peace activist, for Pete's sake! So what if he has associations with potential — Potential! — terrorists? Could it be that he's trying to engage in dialogue with these people, to perhaps convince them not to engage in terrorists acts?

Does this mean that anyone who attempts to mediate a peaceful solution to the "War on Terror" is threat to national security? And, reading between the lines, does this mean the only solution acceptable to our government is defeat of all known and potential terrorists through military action?
