I bought a couple of teach-your-self books, plus I have two mentors, both of whom learned how to crochet as children. I'm still a beginner though, so finishing the afghan felt like an accomplishment.

Thank you! I like bright colors -- no drab creme and earth tones for me!

That is awesome! I'm really impressed. I've made a few afghans in my time, the first time I was probably about 8. But nothing this colorful and elaborate! You have every right to be proud of yourself.

I love this. If we had replicators, I'd be asking for a copy of that right now.

Chain mail's been one of those things I've always liked, but have never learned how to make. Maybe I lack that patience, as I've had a handful of photocopied instructions for more than a dozen years (including some for some absolutely gorgeous oriental (Japanese, if memory serves) stuff).

Your comment makes me think of, um, niobium -- thin colorful metal sometimes used in making jewelry. I wonder what an afghan made from it would look and feel like. I'm curious, but have neither the spare time nor spare cash to find out.

Beautiful!! How long did it take you? I've never made an afghan, but always thought about it.

I'm not entirely sure. About a month, maybe? Not only am I not certain when I began, but I was working on another project at the same time. Keep in mind that I watch a *lot* of tv -- and camped out on the couch for four or five hours every night along with my crochet hooks and yarn. On the other hand, there wasn't a whole lot of thought required -- each block is either a regular single crochet or a single crochet drawn through the front loop only. I do know it took me three days to sew the squares together.
