Well, it's certainly a male - the pedipalps (the two short appendages on the head) have the "boxing glove" tips that are characteristic of male spiders, and he's way too skinny to be a female this time of year (females would be full of eggs now).
I can't see his eyes and spinnerettes well enough to be sure, but I think he's likely to be a wolf spider
. If you could get a picture of his face, we'd be able to tell if he had the pair of huge eyes that identify wolf spiders. He could also be either a funnel-web weaver, or a European House Spider. The colors are more like a wolf spider, but identifying spiders by color is notoriously unreliable.
