I've been home from work for about 15 minutes and sat down to go through today's email. One of the messages was from someone who works for Channel 13 Action News in Las Vegas (KTNV-TV) asking me to call the station in regards to my missing step-brother. I went to the station's web page to see if the message was legitimate and discovered that one of today's lead stories is "Bones Found Linked To 39 Year Old Man." I called the station, but the person who sent me email has already left for the day. I next called my step-sister to see if she's heard anything, and learned from her husband that about a week ago Chad's driver's license was found in the desert near some sun-bleached bones. Chad's dental records have been compared with the partial jawbone recovered from the desert and it's now confirmed, the bones belong to my step-brother.

To quote from the article:

Bones, believed to be human remains, were found in the desert on May 20 near Lake Mead Blvd., near Sunrise Mountain.

The Coroner's office now says the bones belong to Chad Robert Lightle, a 39 year old man.

He was originally from Rochester, MI.

Lightle was reported missing in 2001.

The cause of his death has not been determined at this time.

Chad was missing for a long time and I thought there was good possibility he was murdered or committed suicide. Nevertheless, learning that he really is gone is a shock. I guess I'd never really given up hope that he was alive and well, and that he would rejoin the family some day.

I am sorry to hear that your step-brother was found in a way other than what you had hoped. I do hope that the reason behind his death is solved so that you may fully begin the healing process.

My apologies, I don't really know what to say in regards to this sad situation.

It's okay that you don't know what to say. Heck, *I* don't know what to say either. I can't even figure out how I feel. Chad was missing for seven years and part of me thinks that he was gone for so long that I shouldn't be missing him any more today than I was yesterday. Although I do recognize that I hadn't grieved for him when he was missing. While he was gone I did what little investigating into his disappearance I could do and kept hoping he'd contact us when he was ready.

I don't know if we'll be able to learn what caused his death. I hope the coroner and investigators will be able to figure it out, but it may not be possible with an incomplete skeleton and not a whole lot else.

Thank you. I'm more worried about my step-sisters and my ex-step-mother. Chad was my ex-step-mother's only son and he was so close to one of my step-sister's in age that they practically grew up as twins. I expect this will be a heck of a lot harder on them than it will be on me.

Oh my God, I had no idea. I am so sorry for your loss. *hugs you tight* And what a terrible way to find out. :(

I hope that this brings you closure and, eventually, peace. I hope that they can find out what happened to him. I'm just so sorry this happened.

Finding out was a shock, but I always knew it was a possibility. When I found the email tonight my first thought was that it was another hoax -- there are a surprising number of jokers in this world who, apparently, don't have anything better to do than give false leads. Now I have to update Chad's web page and announce that he is no longer missing.

Oh, sweetie, wow. I know you figured something like this had happened, but I'm so sorry it turned out to be the case. E-mail me if you feel up to it. I can finally look at the laptop screen without getting dizzy.

*hugs*

Thank you. It's a shock to learn my step-brother's deceased, but at least he isn't alone in the desert any longer.

Answers would be nice, but I think the most we can realistically expect is to have Chad's remains returned to the family. There simply isn't enough evidence to provide the cause of death, let alone a date, or information on how he ended up in Nevada.

Well, it's more like one mystery solved, two more to go. We know where he is now, but not how he got there or what happened to him. The analytical and mystery-loving parts of me found living through a real life mystery fascinating. I don't expect we'll get answers on the remaining questions but I can live without knowing.

So sorry to hear this - such difficult news for you. I hope it does bring some form of closure and allow you to complete the grieving process - such a sad concept, but as you've said, now he can come home.

Thinking of you x

I do think knowing is better than not knowing. Not that I wouldn't trade "closure" for my step-brother in a heartbeat. Thanks for thinking of me. :-)

I'm so sorry for your loss. I suppose the only upside is that the family now has closure, but it must still be a shock.

Take care honey.

It was one heck of a surprise, that's for sure. I surely never expected to find out something bad happened to a relative by way of email that looked so much like a hoax.

I did manage to learn the remains were found by a pair of geologists, who were surveying the land for the department of land management. The bones were apparently out in the open. I also heard from someone (though at this point I can't recall if it was something I read or someone I actually talked with) that hikers sometimes get lost and die out there. There wasn't enough left to determine cause of death, so we'll never know if it was murder, suicide, misadventure, or natural causes. Nor enough left to determine exactly how long he was out there. From the state of the bones, the anthropologist called in for a consult estimated anything from two to five years. That's an awful lot of time to try to find someone in the area who would have known and remembers him, particularly when I have no idea where to start asking. I haven't a clue as to how he ended up in Las Vegas. He was born and reared in Michigan and it was in Michigan where he disappeared. As far as I know, he got the urge to travel and headed west. But exactly how, I don't know as his truck had been repossessed and he was short on money as he'd recently become jobless.

Anyway, thanks for your kind thoughts. They help.
